History of Manly
The name Manly was derived from Kay-ye-my clan, who was described by Captain Arthur Phillip as confident and manly.
In his statement, he said “their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place.”
In 1873, Henry Gilbert Smith sold his wharf to the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Company, who coined the famous expression “Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care" to advertise their Ferry.
Later on, the company built several of the famous attractions in Manly East including the Manly Fun Pier.
