Residents of the Dee Why suburb could not tell exactly how the suburb’s name came to be.
A pencil note was seen in James Meehan’s book, where he written “Wednesday, 27th Sept, 1815 Dy Beach - Marked a Honey Suckle Tree near the Beach".
There are no specifics on what the DY means, but arguments state that DY was the letter used by the surveyor to mark the places in the map. Other than that, they believe that it was an aboriginal term used by Meehan to name the locations he surveyed.
From 1840 forward, Dee Why was spelled one word- Deewhy- until it was used to name Dee Why Heights and Dee Why West in the 1950’s.
