The Bilgola suburb was divided into two suburbs, namely the Bilgola Beach and the Bilgola Plateau, in 2012.
History of Bilgola
The suburb’s name Bilgola came from the Aboriginal word Belgoula meaning “a pretty beach with steep slopes, studded with cabbage palms” or “swirling waters”.
The term Belgoula was first used in 1814 according to James Meehan’s records.
In 1822, Robert Henderson was awarded with 100 acres of land and he named it as Belgoola. Later on, the term Belgoola was simplified into Bilgola.
